Indigenous Education

In Seine River School Division we value the diversity of all our students and the experiences they bring to our classrooms. The National Commission for Truth and Reconciliation has put out 94 specific calls to action of which education plays an integral role. It is education that will help our nation heal and move forward in collective understanding of our history and mistakes made. Students will have opportunities to engage in the learning of the history of Indigenous people. There are many age appropriate ways to do this, including the use of children's literature, media, and discussion. Indigenous perspectives can be brought into all curricula areas to broaden students' awareness of their learning.

Students and teachers, whether Indigenous or Non-indigenous, are able to benefit from education in a culturally sensitive manner that draws upon, utilizes, promotes, and enhances awareness of Indigenous traditions, beyond the standard Western curriculum of reading, writing, and arithmetic. As we move forward, our classrooms will reflect Indigenous Perspectives. We will support success of all our students with a growing understanding of the variety of gifts our students bring to our classroom and school communities.
