Notes from the Music Room

Minneapolis Music Trip Meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 6:00-7:00 in the CSNC Music Room.

September has been a busy start-up month in the music room with grade 9 band, senior band, jazz choir and concert choir up and running.  This short monthly newsletter contains information about these courses and upcoming events and activities.

1.     Students who are new to band or choir must purchase a CSNC Music Shirt ($35) as part of their school music uniform.  These students will be sized for the shirt at school on Monday, Oct. 1 and Tuesday, Oct. 2.  Once they have been sized, they will be given a note to take home explaining how to pay for the shirt either online through the CSNC Parent Pay System or by cash/cheque payable to CSNC at the CSNC Office.  Shirts will be shipped to the school in mid-November in time for Choralfest and the Winter Concert in December.

2.     SPECIAL FUNDRAISING INFORMATION:  CSNC provides the opportunity for band and choir students to attend various optional music events such as attending opera, symphony, and musical theatre performances.  In addition, every second year, we organize a multi-day out-of-province music trip.  To help students cover some of the associated costs of these excursions, CSNC organizes several fundraisers each year.  Students can choose to participate in all, some, or none of the fundraisers.  All fundraised money is credited individually and records are kept in the CSNC office.  Fundraised money can be held over in each student's individualized account from year to year allowing students the opportunity to save for the big trips.  If there is still fundraised money in the student's account at the end of grade 12, the money can be used to offset graduation dinner fees.  However, if a student transfers schools or there is still money left over after graduation, the fundraised money will remain with the music program.

We already finished Show and Save Books, and are beginning Peak of the Market's Farm-To-School Vegetable Sale this week (see links below).  Extra information about this fundraiser will be provided to those students choosing to participate in the fundraiser.

**If students wish to use money in their school fundraiser account to pay for excursions, the music shirt, etc., they must talk to Ms. Porter in the office.

 3.     Many students have signed up to go to the Opera on Nov. 22 (Mozart's Don Giovanni).  In early November, students will be receiving a permission form for the event which will include pick-up and drop-off times at the school as we are taking a SRSD School Bus to and from the event.  The cost is $20 and may be paid online through the CSNC Parent Pay System or by cash/cheque at the CSNC Office.

 4.     2019 is a Music Trip year and the CSNC Concert Choir and Senior Band will be going to Minneapolis on May 15-19, 2019.  There will be a very important Parent and Student Meeting for the trip at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, Oct. 10 in the CSNC Music Room.  I will be presenting information about the trip such as the cost, payment deadlines, itinerary, etc., so please mark this date on your calendar.  The meeting will end by 7:00 pm enabling you to attend the University and College Info Night from 7:00-8:30 in the CSNC Library.

5.     CSNC will be presenting Mary Poppins, The Musical from April 9-13, 2019.  Cast auditions will be held in late October and students interested in being part of the Art Team, Technical Crews, and Pit Band need to listen for announcements regarding meeting dates and times.  Our full-length productions are highly anticipated by the community, so please encourage your child to get involved with this huge musical event.
